Investigators from the Yorktown Police Department received a hotline message from the Peekskill Police Department shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, regarding a vehicle that had been stolen and was traveling eastbound on Crompond Road (Route 202) in Yorktown.
Several police units were dispatched to Crompond Road in an attempt to locate the vehicle, while the owner tracked it with GPS and provided officers with updates of the location of the stolen car.
Officers were able to track down the stolen car on Croton Lake, and an investigation determined that Peekskill resident Jair Castro, 26, was allegedly in possession of the stolen car, while operating it with a suspended license. Castro was also allegedly in possession of marijuana at the time of his apprehension.
Castro was arrested and charged with a felony count of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. He was also cited for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Following processing and arraignment, Castro was remanded to the custody of the Westchester County Department of Corrections in lieu of $1,000 cash or $5,000 bond. Castro is due back in Yorktown Justice Court on July 19 to answer the charges.
